9 MPG COLOR CODE MACHELITE GREEN 249U (TWO-TONE) UPHOLSTERY BEIGE W124 Model History (extracted from MB World Blog) Mercedes-Benz 124 series (1984 to 1996) First presented in 1984, the 124-model series is the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle family to bear the name E-Class.
At the debut, however, the type of designation still followed the classic pattern.
Aesthetically and technically, the W 124 was based on the compact class W 201 thanks to its objectively sporty lines, the body made of high-strength steel sheets, and the superbly designed low Cd(drag coefficient) perfectly matched to its marvelous double overhead cam E-42 V8 motor.
Initially, Mercedes-Benz offered the new model series known as the 400 E however for the second time in June 1993 was rebadged as the E 420 as part of the E Class family.
The marking of the individual types consists of an E and the three-digit sequence of digits indicating the displacement.
E Class The 'E-Class name first appeared in the USA with the face-lifted W124 in 1994.
These mid-size cars were created to fill the gap between the more compact range of Mercedes and the larger S-Class.
The W124 saw the introduction of incredible technology for the time and had one of the lowest drag co-efficiencies in the world at the time of release assisting with performance and fuel economy.
The W124 was an instant success worldwide despite the large price tag in comparison to similar-sized vehicles.
The E initially stood for Einspritzung, (German for fuel injection); a new feature in volume production vehicles at the time that the E-Class first appeared, with the E as a suffix to the engine nomenclature (e.
g.
420).
It was not until the launch of the facelifted W124 that the E was used as a prefix (i.
e.
E220) and the model was referred to officially as the E-Class (or E-Klasse).
Much of the 124's engineering and many of its features were advanced automotive technology at its introduction, incorporating innovations that have been adopted throughout the industry.
It had one of the lowest drag coefficients (Cd) due to its aerodynamic body that included a plastic molding for the undercarriage to streamline airflow beneath the car, reducing fuel consumption and wind noise.
It has a single windscreen wiper that has an eccentric mechanism at its base that extends the wiper's reach to the top corners of the windscreen (more than if it had traveled in a simple arc).
The saloon/sedan, coup s, and convertibles have optional rear headrests that would fold down remotely to improve rearward visibility when required.
Now much sought after and particularly rare to find this 1994 E420 comes in the iconic and highly desired Machelite Two Tone (249U)upper Lower Green with cream leather trim.
This car presents very well both inside and out for the 136600 Miles traveled since new and is fitted with the standard Mercedes luxuries that you would expect such as leather, interior power sunroof, windows, mirrors, and more noting some leather cracking on front driver and passenger seats.
This car is a good example and with increased interest in the W124 range, particularly with sought-after E420 sedans, it has earned its title as a modern classic.
It is often said these are quickly climbing in value and are almost eligible for historic registration and should not be mistaken or confused with the earlier generation 400E.
COMPARISON 1992 E400 VS 1994 E420 The E420 and 400E are nearly identical but with subtle differences.
Mechanically they are pretty much the same, cosmetically, they differ quite a bit.
The '93 is a pre-facelift, which means it has the old-style DOT headlights, a more prominent grill, unpainted bumper impact strips, a slightly different rear bumper, deck lid, and tail lights.
The E420 received a facelift, receiving a sleeker fascia and smoked taillights.
It is widely regarded as being much better looking than the pre-facelift 400E.
The E420, while using the same engine design, received some internal tweaks.
Of interest, is it has a higher compression ratio (11:
0 for the later car vs.
10:
1 for the early car) which resulted in a mild improvement in fuel economy.
It has been said that the quality of the paint used on the early cars is better and the later cars are a little more prone to rust as a result.
This may or may not be true, but either way, more than twenty years have passed, and at this point, it's all down to what kind of life the car has lived as is presented in this example.
Note there are two small repaired rust spots along the roof trim near the rear window and also note that the roof has been recently (Oct 2022) repainted.
The wiring harness was the Achilles heel of the car, and it affects all V8-equipped 124's.
It was made of a new biodegradable material that biodegraded too quickly, causing a whole slew of electrical issues ranging from minor running issues to making the car undrivable.
You can check this via the service history, or by looking at the car itself.
The easiest way to check on the car is to look for a tag on the passenger side near where the harness connects to the ECU box.
Ideally, it should say DELPHI and should be dated.
The Delphi harnesses use a different and well-tested long-lasting insulated material that does not biodegrade as was supplied by the OEM.
Note:
The electrical wiring Harness in mention on this car was duly replaced with the specified Delphi Genuine Engine Harness # 124-440-1906 (see in photos).
This E420 has been a constant source of interested onlookers and is a pleasure to own and drive.
It has been taken care of its whole life and with a new owner providing care and maintenance, it will keep providing driving pleasure and continue creating admiring looks for many more years.
A current at the time of writing CARFAX is available showing ownership with Clean Title in the state of Hawaii with two owners since original registration.
The vehicle is available for inspection and test drive in Honolulu HAWAII.
Shipping costs to the West Coast ports in SF or LA may be equally shared with the vendor by negotiation.
